According to the National Vital Statistics System, Mortality National Vital Statistics System, from 1999 through 2010, a total of 46,419 deaths from unintentional drowning (including boating) occurred in the United States, an average of 3,868 deaths per year.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that children between the age of 1 and 14 account for more than one-fourth of all drowning accident fatalities. The number one cause of drowning accidents for children in this age group is swimming pool accidents. For every child that dies in a drowning accident, another four children receive emergency department care for water-related injuries, according to the CDC.
